INSTALLATION
INSTALLATION
Which
version should I be using?
Currently (May 2003) netVESPA and netSystems
supplies the 1.4.1_02 version of the Java Plug-in. There is,
however, a known bug in this version that causes connectivity
failure from within networks using Microsoft ISA server (Sun
Bug ID is 4722333). In order to avoid this we have maintained
compatibility with the 1.3.1_02 Java Plug-in, and will continue
to supply this as an alternative if you experience problems
with the later version.
When
the Java Plug-in is being installed a message comes up saying
‘Access Denied’
You do not have the permissions to
install programs; please consult your IT department, who will
perform the installation for you.
The
Java Plug-in has apparently been installed without any problem,
but when I try to start netVESPA and netSystems, nothing happens.
Under certain circumstances the Java Plug-in
will not install unless logged on under the Administrator
account, even if the user has administrative rights. However,
the program will not return an error message and will even
declare the installation a success. This is an issue that
we hope Sun will address in a future release.
ERROR DIAGNOSIS
How
do I access debugging information?
All versions of the plug-in contain
a console that will output debugging information if enabled.
This information may then be saved to a file, or copied into
an email, that may then be sent to Magenta netLogic Support
for analysis. The console may be displayed from either:
- Control Panel
. Open the Control Panel
· Double-click the Java Plug-in icon
· On the General tab, check the radio button marked
‘Show Console’
When you next connect to netVESPA and netSystems, the console will be opened
- System Tray Icon
· Browse to the netVESPA and netSystems server log in page.
· Right-click the Java icon in the System tray in
the bottom right corner of your screen
· Choose Show Console
The console will display error messages
that may be returned from the server.
OPERATION
I
cannot connect to the server: I get through to the login page,
but after entering my details get no response.
Java Console Error message: (java.io.IOException:
Unable to tunnel through proxy. Proxy returns "HTTP/1.1
407 Proxy Authentication Required ( The ISA Server requires
authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy
service is denied. )",
There are a number of reasons HTTP tunneling through a proxy
server/firewall will fail:
- Wrong version of Internet Explorer. Both
Microsoft and Sun recommend using at least IE 5.5 if using
HTTP tunneling through a proxy server.
- Wrong version of Java Plug-in. Version
1.4.0-01 contained a bug that broke the tunneling protocol.
This bug is also present in version 1.4.1_02. Users should
upgrade to 1.4.1 or revert to 1.3.1_02.
- Unpatched version of Microsoft Internet
Acceleration and Security server. This server is frequently
used as the proxy server for many companies and unless it
is upgraded to SP1, HTTP tunneling will not work with versions
of the Java Plug-in above 1.4. Ask your IT team to upgrade
the IAS server.
Performance
of netVESPA and netSystems is very slow.
Java Console Error message: Invalid Date Format (repeated)
Change the short date format from dd.MM.yyyy
to dd/MM/yyyy. This may be found in Control Panel, Regional
Options, under the tab named Date. If you drop down the list
for Short Date you will find the entry for dd/MM/yyyy.
The
Login page for netVESPA and netSystems still displays the previous version
number and I cannot log in.
Java Console Error message: No message
Your browser is still using the previous
version of the netVESPA and netSystems client file (netVESPA and netSystems.jar). To resolve
this you must clear the Java cache, so the new version may
be downloaded:
- Open Control Panel
- Double-click on the Java icon.
- Under the Cache tab, click the
button marked ‘Clear’ or ‘Clear Cache’,
depending
on your version.
- Log in to netVESPA and netSystems as normal.
